FORMER UNITED STAR DA SILVA URGES CLUB TO SIGN PSV EINDHOVEN FORWARD
Manchester United are ready to make a formal bid for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo. According to Jason Burt from The Telegraph, the Red Devils are set to go all-out to sign Gakpo. With only two weeks of the transfer window left, United are in a hurry to get some new faces to Old Trafford.
The two shocking defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford can be understood as the catalyst behind this change.
Erik ten Hag’s start to the season has gone haywire as his side are rock bottom of the Premier League table. United are on a hunt to sign a forward who can strengthen their front-line. Cody Gakpo is understood to be one of the players on that list.
Cody Gakpo will be a shrewd signing
The talented PSV Eindhoven ace is primarily a left-winger but can play anywhere along the front line. He had a stupendous season last year, bagging 21 goals and 14 assists in 47 games across all competitions. Ajax attackers Sebastien Haller and Dusan Tadic were the only two players who had more goal contributions than him in the Dutch league.
The vast difference between the two leagues raises a question about his ability to perform at the same level in United’s jersey. However, if he gets it right, he could be a solid addition to the team for the next few years. The 23-year-old is not the only forward the Red Devils are after this summer.
Ajax forward Antony is understood to be their primary target.
The club submitted an offer of £68 million for the Brazillian, but it was rejected by Ajax. Signing Gakpo would be cheaper. The same report from The Telegraph claims that a fee of around £38.2m would be enough to seal the deal. If this is the case, signing Gakpo will make much more sense rather than splashing an outrageous amount on Antony.
