Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has revealed that neighbours Manchester City reject of the opportunity to sign him when he was offered as an eight-year-old boy.

Danny Welbeck is turning out to be one of the best strikers amongst the younger generation in England.

He came up through the academy at Manchester United, which has produced many famous players over the years like David Beckham and Paul Scholes. However, Welbeck recently revealed that he would not have come through the United academy had City grab the opportunity to sign him when he was only eight years old. After City's rejection, Welbeck joined the Manchester United youth academy.

Speaking ahead of the match against Benfica (which the online Europa League betting suggests they will win) Danny Welbeck said that he did not know about the rejection from City, as his dad choose not to tell him and disappoint him on Christmas. Welbeck revealed that he was immediately picked up by the United youth academy after Christmas when he was playing for a local tournament. Since then, Welbeck has never looked back.

He has spent time on loan at various clubs including the likes of Preston and Sunderland, which have proved to be beneficial in his career. Now, he is ahead of the likes of Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov for a place in the United first team.

“My Dad didn’t tell me at the time, it was just before Christmas and he didn’t want to break any bad news. Straight after Christmas I played in a tournament for my local side, Fletcher Moss, and that’s where United picked me up. I went for a trial and have never looked back since. I was always a Red anyway,” Welbeck said ahead of the Fulham match, which the striker says would not be easy for United as they look to go top of the table once again.
